SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 16.80 g, 1 h), from the 'Demareteion' series, circa 470-465. Charioteer, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in both, driving slow quadriga to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses with a wreath. Rev. ΣV-RΑΚ-ΟΣΙ-ΟΝ Head of Arethousa to right, wearing olive wreath, single pendant earring and pearl necklace with pendant, all enclosed within linear circle; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 389 (V198/R269). HGC 2, 1308. Jameson 754 (same dies). Leu 45 (1988), 54 (same dies). SNG ANS 121. Sult -. Rare and of exceptionally fine style. Some roughness and with areas of weakness and a few marks, otherwise, about very fine.
